Maximum Security Colt Wins Texas Derby
It was back-to-back stakes victories for Maximum Security’s Instant Replay (3c Maximum Security x Academy Gal, by Medaglia d’Oro) when the colt won Monday’s $300,000 Texas Derby at Lone Star Park.
The Grade II-placed runner was coming into this race after securing his first stakes win last month and showed bad weather wasn’t a deterrent when racing in the rain.
Going off as the race favorite in the 1 1/16-mile dirt race, he broke well before rating along the inside. Racing just two lengths behind the leader, Instant Replay waited until the stretch to find clear running and take off. He collared the leaders in deep stretch before inching away late to win by a length.
Trained by owner Brad Cox, this was the fourth win in eight starts for Instant Replay, who has $479,858 in earnings. The Gary and Mary West-bred is a grandson of the stakes placed Flashy Gal.
