Mendelssohn Colts Romps to Santa Anita Victory

It was a runaway victory for Mendelssohn’s Conducted (2c Mendelssohn x Marvelous Spot, by Archarcharch) on Saturday when the colt broke his maiden by 6 ¼ lengths at Santa Anita.

Making his third start in the one-mile turf race, the O.J. Jauregui-trained Conducted went off as the favorite after running in a stakes his last start. The colt gunned it to the lead soon after the gate opened and never let the others see the front.

Keeping an easy lead down the backstretch, he was allowed to extend his margin around the turn and that’s exactly what he did. Every stride saw him build his lead until he was 6 ¼ lengths in front at the line while coasting to the finish.

The colt owned by Danny Eplin and Arthur Spencer was bred by Machmer Hall out of Archarcharch mare Marvelous Spot.

That winner is now the dam of three winners from four to race and is one of seven winners out of her own dam In Her Glory. In Her Glory was a stakes winner who also placed in multiple Grade I races before producing stakes placed Settle Glory and Combanchera. Her placed daughter Sambuca Clasica went on to produce champion Classic Empire and the stakes winning duo of Anytime Magic and Uptown Twirl.

In all, there are 12 stakes performers named under In Her Glory’s name with five of her daughters producing stakes performers.

Mendelssohn’s 153 winners in 2025 puts him fourth among all North American stallions while his 14 juveniles winners this year tie him for seventh. That group of juveniles is led by two stakes winners and three stakes performers with those two stakes winners tying him in fifth alongside his sire.
