Mendelssohn Filly Best in Suzie O’Cain
Team Hanley and Thirty Year Racing’s Mommy’s Turn (3f Mendelssohn x Hard to Stay Notgo, by More Than Ready) was back in the winner’s circle on Wednesday with a win in the Suzie O’Cain Stakes at Saratoga.
Making her stakes debut in this 1 1/16-mile turf race, the filly tracked the leader early while keen to do more with Jose Lezcano convincing her to settle down the backstretch. She was ready to run when Lezcano turned her loose in the stretch and easily passed the early leaders to take command.
The filly pulled away to a two-length win in the end to take her record to two wins in three starts this year.
Trained by Chad Brown, the Chester and Mary Broman-bred has finished out of the top two only once in her career.
Mommy’s Turn is out of multiple stakes winner Hard To Stay Notgo, who also produced stakes winner Makin My Move and Uncle Mo’s stakes placed Gotta Go Mo. Hard to Stay Notgo is one of three stakes winners out of Whichwaydidshego, who is out of successful broodmare and stakes winner Spunoutacontrol.
Spunoutacontrol produced Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Fed Biz and stakes winner Spun Silk, who went on to produce Grade I winner Joking. Spunoutacontrol is also a half-sister to champion Minardi and Grade II winner and successful Coolmore sire Tale of the Cat.
Hard To Stay Notgo also produced a Justify juvenile colt as well.
This is Mendelssohn’s fifth stakes winner of the year with the stallion leading all fourth crop sires alongside Justify with 20 stakes performers. He also leads the way by winners this season with 112.
