Saturday Flirt (Mendelssohn) Wins The Soaring Softly

Mendelssohn Filly Romps in Soaring Softly

Mendelssohn’s Saturday Flirt (3f Mendelssohn x Dragic, by Broken Vow) was an easy winner of Sunday’s Soaring Softly Stakes at Saratoga with Tiz The Law’s Cloe in second.

The race was moved to 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt instead of turf, but the surface change didn’t prove to be an issue for Saturday Flirt. While Cloe pressured the leader, Saturday Flirt sat a few lengths behind the pair in a comfortable position.

Junior Alvarado started urging on his mount around the turn and she moved closer as Cloe took the lead. Barreling down the center of the track, Saturday Flirt didn’t give Cloe a chance to fight back when flying past her in the final furlong.

Given a hand ride to the line, Saturday Flirt won by 3 ¾ lengths over Cloe for her third win in four starts.

"She handled the dirt beautifully today. The dirt was a question mark for me today. I didn't know if she was going to be able to handle it or not. I think she answered that question pretty clearly today," said Alvarado

Trained by her breeder Wesley Ward, Saturday Flirt is owned by Fitriana Hay.

The filly is out of the multiple stakes placed Dragic, who comes from an illustrious family. Her Grade III winning dam Letgomyecho is also the dam of champion Echo Zulu, Mendelssohn’s Grade I-winning studmate Echo Town, and Grade III winning J Boys Echo with five stakes performers overall out of the mare.

This is the 17th stakes performer of the year for Mendelssohn, putting him seventh among all North American sires in 2025 with his four stakes winners tied with Medaglia d’Oro, Munnings, Tapit, American Pharoah, Arrogate, and others.
