Wootton Bassett Leading Sire Karaka Book 1

The reigning Champion European 2YO Sire in 2024, Wootton Bassett is quickly making a big impression in Australia thanks to a string of exciting juveniles from his first Australian crop and the fact was not lost on buyers at the NZB National Yearling Sale this week where he finished Book 1 as the leading sire by average.

Wootton Bassett had 10 yearlings offered and nine were sold at an average $361,667 which was nearly $200,000 above the sale average of $164,819.

His colts led the way with youngsters from Il Affare, Matagouri and Aspen Colorado selling for $725,000, $600,000 and $600,000, while his top priced filly from Paper Plane sold for $340,000 to Ger Beemsterboer.

The third foal of Fastnet Rock mare Paper Plane, a sister to Group II winner Lumosty, she was the most successful pinhook of the sale providing a great return for Hallmark Stud, who purchased the filly from Coolmore at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $65,000.

Paper Plane had a filly by St Mark’s Basilica last year and is back in foal to him again.

Wootton Bassett is riding high on the first season sire list with exciting colts Wodeton, Pallaton and Gallo Nero all metro winners, while stakes-placed Wiltshire Square and Yamashita’s Gold were both placed in the Blue Diamond Previews last weekend and promising West of Swindon, has had one start for a second in the $1million ATC Golden Gift.

Wootton Bassett fans will have further opportunity to secure his stock at upcoming sales with eight at Inglis Classic, 13 at Inglis Premier and 17 for Inglis Easter
