Calyx 2016 - 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Calyx yesterday afternoon. Calyx suffered an acute foot injury mid-season; however, despite intensive treatments, it has been necessary to euthanise him on humane grounds.
A precocious and immensely talented colt, Calyx was the very first winner by his sire Kingman, impressing on debut in a Newmarket maiden before storming to victory in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot just ten days later.
He carried that brilliance into his stud career, making an explosive start in 2023 with 27 individual winners from his first crop of two-year-olds. Among them were Group 2 winners Classic Flower and Persian Dreamer, and Grade 3 Del Mar winner Zona Verde. His early success was reflected in the overwhelming support he received in 2024, when he covered more mares than any other flat sire in Europe. He has also enjoyed a fine start to 2025 in the southern hemisphere with five new blacktype horses, including Group 3 winner Sepals.
“It is very unfortunate to lose such a promising young sire,” said Castlehyde’s Cathal Murphy. “He was very strongly supported by breeders last year and looked to have an extremely bright future ahead of him.”
Calyx leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, both on the racecourse and at stud, and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of working with him.
