Calyx Colt Impresses On Seasonal Return

Rogue Diplomat (3c Calyx – Only Young Once, by Galileo) produced a smart performance when dropped down in trip on his three-year-old return on Friday.

Bought at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale for 115,000gns, James Owen’s charge had finished third on both his starts as a two-year-old. He was well-supported on return in the seven-furlong novice stakes at Leicester and raced close to the pace throughout under Harry Davies. In front before the four-furlong pole, he was clear when ridden a furlong from home and went on to score by two and a quarter lengths, with another four and a quarter lengths back to the third horse.

Rogue Diplomat is owned by The Rogues Gallery, whose Tony Elliott said: “We’ve always liked him and he’s shown so much at home. We tried him over too far at Chelmsford last year and we’re delighted to see him win. He’s a different horse this year. James is such a good trainer and has done a great job with him.”

Bred by Mrs Noreen McManus, Rogue Diplomat not only continues Calyx’s smart start at stud, but also his particular affinity with Galileo mares. The cross has produced Group 2 heroine Persian Dreamer, Dewhurst Stakes third Eben Shaddad and 95-rated juvenile Hot Fuss.
