Northern Champion (2c Wootton Bassett - Zargos, by Shamardal) made the perfect start to his career when winning the valuable Arqana Series des Poulains conditions race at Deauville on Thursday.

The Ed Walker-trained juvenile was sent off favourite and obliged when winning a protracted tussle up the home straight to score by a length under Kieran Shoemark.

Churchill colt Lommi was three-quarters of a length behind the first two in third.
