Smart Juvenile Double For Wootton Bassett

Rising Power (2c Wootton Bassett – Pussycat Lips, by Holy Roman Emperor) battled back to make it two from two at Sandown on Friday afternoon.

Godolphin’s €600,000 yearling buy made a winning debut at Newmarket last month and enjoyed a form boost when the third horse subsequently scored. Sent off favourite to follow up under William Buick, Charlie Appleby’s charge raced prominently throughout the five furlong novice stakes and was ridden approaching the two furlong marker. The bay displayed a game attitude to assert inside the final 110 yards and kept on to score by three parts of a length, with another four and three-quarter lengths back to the third.

Bred by Epona Bloodstock, the Wootton Bassett colt holds entries in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes and Group 2 Norfolk Stakes next week.

Meanwhile, over at Saint-Cloud, Nighttime (2c Wootton Bassett – Daytime, by Frankel) justified strong market support with a smart performance in the Prix Arbele, a seven-furlong conditions race.

Runner-up over six furlongs on debut, Christopher Head’s charge was sent off favourite to go one better over a furlong further and made all under Maxime Guyon. Pushed along turning for home, the Wertheimer & Frere homebred was pushed clear by the final furlong and was eased down to lead by three and a half lengths on the line.
