Stakes Targets Planned For Debut Winner By Wootton Bassett
Daytona (2c Wootton Bassett – Detailed, by Motivator) produced a smart debut performance to win Sunday’s seven-furlong maiden at Gowran Park.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained newcomer raced in touch under Jack Cleary and was pushed along approaching the two-furlong marker. Ridden to lead a furlong later, he kept on well to win by two and a half lengths, eased down.
“He was very professional,” commented Ballydoyle representative Chris Armstrong. “He was showing plenty of ability at home but although he had a good draw it’s tricky for one first time.
“We’ll see how he comes out of it; there is three weeks until the new Listed Pat Smullen race at Naas over a mile or he might be one for the El Gran Senor Stakes.
“He’s definitely a nice horse in the making.”
Bought by MV Magnier and White Birch Farm as a yearling for 500,000gns, Daytona is owned by Coolmore partners, Westerberg and Peter Brant. The son of Wootton Bassett was bred by COP Hanbury.
