First Wave (Wootton Bassett) Draws Clear At Gowran

Wootton Bassett Colt Makes Waves With Smart Maiden Victory

First Wave (3c Wootton Bassett – White Satin Dancer, by Oasis Dream) proved a cut above his rivals when drawing clear in Wednesday’s mile maiden at Gowran Park.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt had placed on his first four starts, most notably finishing a neck behind Dewhurst Stakes second Expanded (Wootton Bassett) first time out. Sent off joint second-favourite at Gowran, he led after a furlong and quickened smartly on the turn for home. Ridden clear approaching the final furlong, he went on to score by four and three quarter lengths under Wayne Lordan, with another four lengths back to the third horse.

“In fairness he had the form in the book,” said stable representative Chris Armstrong. “Wayne gave him a lovely ride from the front, controlled it, set an even tempo and kept quickening up to the line.

“We’ll probably have a look at something like the Britannia with him and see where he fits in. He’s a progressive horse and hopefully he goes on from here.”

Owned by Coolmore partners with Peter Brant, the son of Wootton Bassett was sold by breeder Ecurie des Monceaux for €720,000 as a yearling.
