Unbeaten Mahler Gelding Makes Winning Start Under Rules
Some Song (5g Mahler - Some Sunset, by Malinas) made a successful start to his career under rules when striking at Down Royal on Friday.
The Mahler gelding had run out a four-length winner of his point-to-point at Ballysteen in April for handler Pierce Power and struck again on his first start for Henry de Bromhead.
Ridden Darragh O'Keeffe, the unbeaten Some Song was a few lengths behind the front runners turning into the final straight of the maiden hurdle. When those two exited the scene after falling and unseating respectively, the five-year-old came to strike by 18 lengths.
De Bromhead said: "We were fortunate winners, obviously, but he's a nice horse. Darragh said he got a bit tired after he jumped the third last and they just quickened away from him.
"I’m delighted for Mike Roden, his first winner, and he’s one of the owners of the racecourse.
"We said we would come up and give him a run, and didn't think we would be winning, but there you go - happy days, we're delighted! The plan was to find a horse who could hopefully win here one day not on the first day!"
Some Song was bred by The Beeches Stud.
