First Approach (Wootton Bassett) Wins His Maiden At Naas

Ascot Aim Possible For Smart No Nay Never Colt

First Approach (2c No Nay Never – Alphabet, by Lawman) built on a promising debut to win Saturday’s five-furlong maiden at Naas; a race won by Little Big Bear (No Nay Never) three years prior.

Runner-up to a more experienced rival last month, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was slowly away under Wayne Lordan and raced towards the back of the field in the early stages. Improving to chase the leaders two furlongs from home, the Coolmore homebred finished strongly to lead inside the final furlong, going on to beat the favourite by a length and a quarter.

“We’re delighted,” Aidan O’Brien commented after the race. “He could be an Ascot horse, we might give him another run somewhere if we can get one into him. He said five or six is not a problem, he said he’s not short of speed.”
