Diego Velazquez Lands Group 1 Honours At Deauville

Diego Velazquez (4c Frankel – Sweepstake, by Acclamation) captured his first Group 1 win in the Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Sunday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained four-year-old was always prominent under Christophe Soumillon and ran on strongly to deny the late-finishing effort of Notable Speech. Dancing Gemini (by Camelot) finished in third.

Diego Velazquez was sporting the famous Sangster silks for the first time after being purchased by Sam Sangster Bloodstock earlier this week.

O’Brien said: “He was always a very good horse, we’re over the moon. We thought this race would suit him, he’s been working brilliantly. I’m so delighted.

“He’s very tough and genuine, he had very good form at two and three and Christophe gave him a brilliant ride.”

Diego Velazquez is out of the stakes-winning Acclamation mare Sweepstake, meaning he is a three-parts brother to fellow top-level winner Broome and Group 2 scorer Point Lonsdale (both by Australia).

He was bred by Epona Bloodstock.
