Smart St Mark’s Basilica Filly Earns Group 3 Target
Aylin (2f St Mark’s Basilica – Angelic Light, by Dark Angel) justified strong market support to run out a commanding winner of Thursday’s fillies’ maiden at Glorious Goodwood.
The Karl Burke-trained filly was well-backed on debut earlier this month when she was narrowly denied by the more experienced Bosa Nova (Churchill). Stepping up to seven furlongs in Thursday’s valuable maiden, she was sent off favourite under David Egan and raced close to the pace throughout, asserting as the group moved to the stands’ side in the straight. Soon in command, she drew further clear inside the final furlong, leading by two and three quarter lengths on the line.
Burke later earmarked the Group 3 Prestige Fillies’ Stakes at the track as a likely target for Aylin, who is owned by Al Shaqab Racing and Amo Racing. The first crop daughter of St Mark's Basilica was bred by Yeomanstown Stud.
