Play The Music (Mo Town) Wins Lightning City Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs

Big Night for Mo Town at Sovereign Awards

Mo Town runners shined at Thursday’s 50th Sovereign Awards, led by his Champion Female Sprinter Play The Music with his son Scorching also finishing second in voting for Champion 2-Year-Old Male.

Running away with the votes for Champion Female Sprinter with the runner-up finisher earning 113 less votes, Play The Music had an outstanding 2024 with wins in four of seven starts. Trained by Mark Casse for Glassman Racing, Play The Music’s first stakes victory came in the Lightning City Stakes after a win and a third in two Allowance Optional Claiming races.

Play The Music was entered exclusively in graded stakes from that point forward and took Woodbine by storm.

The filly romped in the Grade III Whimsical Stakes by 4 ¼ lengths in May before coming back a month later in the Grade III Royal North Stakes. She didn’t win that race as drastically, but did have 2 ½ lengths on the second place runner in the end to take her combined winning margin in her three stakes victories to 9 ¼ lengths.

Play The Music ended her second with a third place finish in the Grade III Hendrie Stakes, just 1 ½ lengths behind the winner.

The Laura McKinney-bred Play The Music has always been popular at all stages of her life. She was a $110,000 Keeneland September purchase by Smoke Racing from Stony Point before bringing $300,000 at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds In Training from her racing owner when purchased by Eisaman Equine.

Bred by Huntington Stud Farm, Scorching finished behind Practical Joke’so He’s Not Joking by just nine votes in the Champion 2-Year-Old Male category.

Scorching won two of three starts for Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch in his juvenile season when trained by John Charalambous. Both his wins came in stakes with the colt taking out the Simcoe Stakes and Cup and Saucer Stakes.

Mo Town was the sire of four stakes winners in 2024 with a 14.6% stakes horses to runners as well.
