Sioux Nation Colt Wins Listed Sprint In Good Style
Friday saw Powerful Nation (3c Sioux Nation – Atlantic Queen, by Society Rock) gain a deserved black-type victory in the Listed Midsummer Sprint Stakes at Cork.
Andy Slattery’s charge finished in the first three on all his starts as a juvenile, winning two races and placing in three stakes races. Runner-up to Group 1 winner Bucanero Fuerte (Wootton Bassett) in the Sole Power Sprint Stakes on return, he was sent off a short-priced favourite to go one better on Friday.
Tracking the leaders under Andrew Slattery, he was asked to quicken after passing the two-furlong pole and led inside the final furlong. Soon in command, he kept on to score by a length and a quarter, with another two lengths back to the third.
“I think he won very easily,” the winning trainer commented. “We knew he'd come on from Naas and I think he'll improve from today. We didn't abuse him as a two-year-old and trained him so he would improve.”
On future plans, the trainer added: “I had a few races picked out for him; he'll go for the Sapphire Stakes next and it'll all lead to the Flying Five. That and the Prix de l'Abbaye are the dream races and he is a great horse to have.”
The Sioux Nation colt was bred by Kevin Walsh and is owned by the Kevin Sean Tommy Walsh Partnership.
