Buetane A ‘Rising Star’ For Tiz The Law
Tiz The Law’s Buetane (2c Tiz The Law x Taboo, by Forestry) showed why Zedan Racing went to $1.15 million to purchase him earlier this year when the colt earned Thoroughbred Daily News ‘Rising Star’ status in his debut on Sunday.
Starting his career going six furlongs on the dirt, the race favorite was hustled from the gate but had to be reined in when the eventual leader crossed in front of him. He tracked that horse along the outside down the backstretch before stepping up and issuing a challenge going into the turn.
At the top of the stretch, he left the leader behind and was asked for more going into the final furlong before Juan Hernandez let him coast home to a 3 ½ length victory.
Buetane led home a 1-2 finish for trainer Bob Baffert, who also debuted Justify’s second place finisher Falcon Jet in the race.
Zedan Racing paid the sixth highest price of the OBS Spring 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale for Buetane, who was the second most expensive for his sire at the sale with another Tiz The Law colt the topper at $1.5 million.
Bred by Merriebelle Stable, Buetane is a half-brother to stakes winner Let My People Go, Group III placed Der Lu, and stakes placed Smartly Agree among the eight winners out of the mare. The colt’s dam Taboo is a winning daughter of Grade I winner Dream of Summer, making her a half-sister to Grade I winners Creative Cause and Vexatious, Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Destin, and Uncle Mo’s Grade III-placed Summer Promise.
Buetane’s dam returned to Tiz The Law this year.
Tiz The Law’s seven juvenile winners this year is second best of all North American sires and just one behind the top two.
