
Pharoah's Wine Newest American Pharoah Stakes Winner
American Pharoah’s multiple Grade II-placed daughter Pharoah's Wine (4f American Pharoah x Sweeping Paddy, by Paddy O’Prado) added a stakes win to her extensive resume on Thursday with a win in the One Dreamer Stakes at Kentucky Downs.
Racing just over a mile on the turf track, Pharoah's Wine was piloted to a spot just behind the leaders by Corey Lanerie after the gate opened. Racing three wide, she didn’t strike until moved to the center of the track down the stretch to make a big move in the final furlong.
A brief battle with the leader ensued before Pharoah's Wine steadily pulled away to win by 1 ¼ lengths at the line.
Raced by Nancy Delony, William Pacella, and Frank Shoop, who bred her with Frank Jones, Pharoah's Wine has won five of 18 starts. The filly has placed seven other times for $847,475 in earnings with those placings including seconds in the Grade II Jessamine Stakes and Valley View Stakes with a second in the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Turf Mile last out as a prep for this race.
Pharoah's Wine is out of Grade III winner Sweeping Paddy, who has two winners from two named foals. The mare is a full sister to Grade I Preakness Stakes second Cherry Wine and a half-sister to stakes winner C.S. In Charge.
Their Unbridled’s Song dam is a half-sister to Group II placed Bay Story and out of dual stakes winner and Grade I Kentucky Oaks third Sweeping Story. Sweeping Story is a half-sister to champion Exciting Story and stakes winner Diablo’s Story and a full sister to stakes winner Strong Memory.
Sweeping Paddy is the dam of Munnings juvenile Mundy Sweep and a weanling full sister to Pharoah’s Wine. She returned to Munnings this year.
This is the second stakes winner of the week for American Pharoah, who saw his son Stars and Strides close out the Saratoga meet with a Saranac victory on Monday.
