Gleneagles’ Calandagan Tops Year With Cartier Horse Of The Year Award
Calandagan (4g Gleneagles - Calayana, by Sinndar) was crowned Horse of the Year and outstanding Older Horse at the Cartier Awards on Wednesday evening.
The Aga Khan homebred secured three Group 1 victories this year in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Champion Stakes, the last-named coming with a defeat of Ombudsman by two-and-a-quarter lengths.
His King George victory saw him defeat Kalpana and Rebel’s Romance in fine style, while subsequent Prix Vermeille heroine Aventure was three and a half lengths behind Calandagan in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
A son of Gleneagles, Calandagan has not finished outside the first three in 13 starts to date. He was also second to subsequent world champion City Of Troy in last year’s Juddmonte International.
