Group 3 Curragh Double For Gleneagles
Galen (4g Gleneagles – Apache Storm, by Pivotal) completed a Group 3 double for Gleneagles at the Curragh when making all to win the Alleged Stakes under Dylan Browne McMonagle.
Joseph O’Brien’s charge was stepping up to ten furlongs for the first time on Saturday and boasted a three-length advantage with three furlongs left to race. Asked to quicken approaching the final furlong, he ran on well to beat the favourite Jan Brueghel by two and a half lengths.
“He's always been a good horse,” O’Brien said after the race. “Dylan didn't think there was much pace and was happy to go to the front and it was a good performance. I think he does enjoy being ridden like that. We'll look at the Mooresbridge Stakes and then possibly the Tattersalls Gold Cup.”
Owned by Barry Taylor, TG Fitzgerald, Paul Redmond and Barry Fowler, Galen becomes the first Stakes winner bred by Moyns Park Stud out of the mare Apache Storm.
Earlier on the card, One Look (4f Gleneagles – Holy Salt, by Holy Roman Emperor) made a successful return to action in the Group 3 Park Express Stakes.
Billy Lee positioned the Paddy Twomey-trained bay in second and produced her to challenge after the two-furlong pole. Ridden approaching the final furlong, she led inside the final furlong and went on to beat Ecstatic by a length and three quarters.
“She's tough and I think a mile is the minimum for now,” Twomey commented. “One Look will have an entry in the Lanwades Stakes. She's a Group winner now and we'll try and go as far up the ladder as we can.”
The lightly-raced four-year-old adds to a Listed win last season and a valuable debut win in the Goffs Million. The daughter of Gleneagles is owned by the Connolly Racing Syndicate and was bred by Tullpark Ltd.
