I Am River (walk in the park) Wins Maiden Hurdle At Kilbeggan

Getaway Geldings Complete Smart Double

I Am River (6g Getaway – Dreambaby, by Yeats) completed the first leg of a double for Getaway at Kilbeggan when making a winning return to action in the opening maiden hurdle.

Trained by Willie Mullins for JP McManus, the €210,000 purchase was well-backed on debut last January but pulled up and hadn’t been seen since. Partnered by Anna McGuinness on return, the bay made all and boasted a clear advantage by the final flight. Ridden on the run-in, he kept on to justify favouritism by two and a quarter lengths, with another six lengths back to the third.

Representing the winning owner, Frank Berry commented: “He jumped great and got a lovely ride from Anna. She got him into a lovely rhythm, and you’d be delighted with him.”

Bred by GCE Farm, I Am River is a half-brother to Grade 3 hurdler Dream On Baby (Walk In The Park).

Mullins landed the finale on the card, the two-mile bumper, with point-to-point recruit Nadia’s Boy (5g Getaway – Just Janice, by King’s Theatre). The Niall Flynn-bred gelding made a perfect start to his career in a four-year-old maiden for Aidan Fitzgerald and was sent off favourite to make a winning rules debut on Monday.

Ridden prominently by Patrick Mullins, he asserted with over five furlongs left to race and was ridden inside the final furlong. He kept on to beat Ozark’s Walk (Walk In The Park) by two and a quarter lengths, with another seven lengths back to the third horse.

The Getaway gelding is owned by Mustafa Elatrash.
