Son of Yeats Captures Listed Victory At Galway

Winning Smut (6g Yeats - Winning Jenny, by Leading Counsel) landed the biggest prize of his career when winning the Listed BoyleSports Handicap Hurdle at Galway on Saturday.

The Gordon Elliott-trained runner was sent off joint-favourite for the extended two-mile-and-six-furlong contest and was placed prominently under Jack Kennedy. Winning Smut was asked to make headway two furlongs out and duly came home just over two lengths ahead of Fascile Mode (by Walk In The Park), with a further half-a-length back to Chart Topper (also by Walk In The Park).

Lisa O'Neill, assistant trainer to Elliott, said afterwards: “Jack gave Winning Smut a beautiful ride up the inside and said he got there too soon but he toughed it out well. We didn't know how good he was coming into this but he scraped in down the bottom of the weights and having a feather weight in those competitive handicaps helps.”

The gelding is a homebred for Denis J Reddan.
