Practical Joke Filly Proves Best in Stakes Debut

Practical Joke’s Corsia Veloce (2f Practical Joke x Beth’s Bling, by City Zip) kept her perfect record intact in her second start on Saturday with a win in the Catch a Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine.

Breaking her maiden going 5 ½ furlongs on the synthetic track last month, the Josie Carroll trainee added a furlong onto that distance in her stakes debut. Hustled out of the gate, Corsia Veloce quickly joined a battle for the lead before having to be settled as horses crossed in front of her.

She handled that move like a professional and relaxed when piloted to the outside around the turn. One of the widest in the stretch run, Corsia Veloce had a clear path to the line and quickly took over the lead coming to the final furlong.

Corsia Veloce looked like she’d do just enough to get the win, but put on another burst of speed late to win by 1 ½ lengths.

The filly races as a homebred for Glenn Sikura and Mario Serrani out of the City Zip mare Beth’s Bling.

That two-time winner was stakes placed herself and is the dam of three winners from four to race. Corsia Veloce is a fourth-generation stakes performer with her second dam also placing in a stakes and third dam Rose Colored Lady winning a stakes.

Rose Colored Lady is the dam of Grade II winner Too Much Bling and stakes winners Littlebitabling, Ready for Roses, and Barnsy. The mare is also the granddam of Grade II winner El Kabeir and great-granddam of 19-time winner Leona’s Reward.

Practical Joke has 12 stakes winners this year with his 30 stakes performers second best among all North American sires to only his sire.
